Aircraft and airport noise in Los Angeles County

Modeled estimates for general information only — not measurements, not a guarantee, and not for legal, medical or real-estate decisions.
Aircraft noise around Los Angeles County airports is mapped by the airports and by Quiet LA. LAWA publishes noise portals for LAX and Van Nuys, Burbank and Long Beach run their own noise offices, Santa Monica Airport has a City noise office, and Quiet LA adds an estimate derived from official contours to its 24-hour (CNEL) view. The table links each official page.
Contacts and pages were read on . Phone numbers change, so confirm on the airport’s page before you call. The airports are listed alphabetically.

What is the aircraft layer on the Quiet LA map?
It is an estimate derived from each airport’s official noise contours, added to the 24 h (CNEL) value only. The official lines stop at 65 CNEL for most airports, so Quiet LA stretches each airport’s lines outward to 55 CNEL, using the spacing of that airport’s own lines, and interpolates between them. Nothing is added outside the 55 CNEL line. Day, Evening and Night never include aircraft. It is not built from flight tracks, it is not an official level and it is not a measurement; compared with 57 permanent airport noise monitors, it is within about 3 dB on average. Aircraft is a switch in the layers panel, and the links on this page open with it on.
The map also replays recorded flights of one sample day as moving lights, as an illustration. It does not count flights, and it does not model helicopters. See helicopter noise in Los Angeles. For the 24-hour metric, see what CNEL means; for what the layer can and cannot be used for, see Limits and How it’s made.
Which official portals and tracking tools show flights?
- LAWA noise portals for LAX and Van Nuys: interactive pages for exploring aircraft flight activity by area, with an address look-up bar. The pages read show no decibel values.
- WebTrak for LAX and Van Nuys: flight tracks with aircraft type, altitude and origin. LAWA says the data is delayed up to 60 minutes, the replay goes back up to 90 days, and the site is for illustrative purposes only. LAX’s WebTrak covers flights from LAX, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Hawthorne and Torrance plus transiting traffic; Van Nuys’s covers the San Fernando Valley and the western and northern parts of the region, including Burbank traffic.

Which areas lie inside each airport’s official contour?
Each airport’s guide lists, alphabetically and with its source, the area pages that lie partly inside the airport’s published 65 CNEL contour: LAX, Van Nuys, Hollywood Burbank, Long Beach and Santa Monica. The lists say where a contour is. They do not say how loud any area is.
How do I report aircraft noise?
Use the airport’s own line first (table above). The FAA regulates aircraft noise standards, flight procedures and air traffic; for a local airport it says to contact the airport first, and for general concerns it directs people to its ANCIR Portal. For helicopters and other noise, see who to call about noise in Los Angeles.
